The Department of Industrial Engineering's programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET,
If you wish to be considered for a graduate assistantship your application must be complete by January 31 for the Fall term or September 30 for the Spring term. If you are funding yourself or have some other source of financial support these deadlines can be relaxed.
We accept applications on an ongoing basis. However, you must allow at least 2 to 4 weeks for an admission decision to be rendered and for completing the related paperwork. In addition, if you are an international applicant, you must allow another month for the Office of International Services (OIS) to process the paperwork for your visa application, and as much additional time as might be required in your country of origin to obtain a visa from the US Consulate.
For the fall term, we suggest that the application package be complete no later than July 15 for US applicants and no later than April 15 for international applicants. This will allow enough time for your application to be processed and for you to arrive in time for the start of the term.
NOT send hard copies of materials that have been submitted electronically. Original documents are
NOT required until you are admitted and decide to attend the University of Pittsburgh.

Special student status is a category that will allow individuals who are not students in any school in the University to take courses within the program. Although there can be a number of reasons why such cases might exist, the primary use of this status is for students who are enrolled in engineering programs at other Universities who may wish to complete one or a very few courses at Pitt. Applications for Special Student Enrollment are available in the Office of Administration, 151 Benedum Hall. Each of these applications are individually evaluated relative to course prerequisites, the home institution of the student, GPA, etc.
