From the Executive Director

Alan Hirschman, PhD

Professor of Bioengineering, Swanson School of Engineering

Executive Director, Center for Medical Innovation

Our MS program in Medical Product Engineering (MPE) at the University of Pittsburgh is hosted by the Department of Bioengineering in the Swanson School of Engineering. The program is tightly coupled with the Center for Medical Innovation (CMI), which provides seed grants for early stage translational medicine projects, and which provides project opportunities for our students to work collaboratively with world-class clinicians and engineering faculty. Our students have access to the clinical and engineering expertise of the Swanson School of Engineering, the Schools of Health Sciences, the Katz Graduate School of Business, and the Innovation Institute, all located within blocks of each other on the University’s urban campus.

Graduate students in our Medical Product Engineering program work in small teams in a three-semester MS program of project-focused courses and workshops. Our students are encouraged to work as they might in a medical product development company starting with clinical “needs finding” and finishing with commercialization strategy. Many of our project teams have the additional guidance of industry professionals and entrepreneurs in the Pittsburgh region. Most of the core faculty in the program have years of medical product industry experience and connections which benefit our students. We have an excellent record of placing students in the medical products industry as developers, designers, managers, business entrepreneurs, and regulatory professionals. Our students are encouraged to participate in startup competitions within the rapidly advancing “Eds and Meds” innovation infrastructure in the Pittsburgh region.

Feel free to explore our new website (www.engineering.pitt.edu/cmi) and social media to learn more about what we do, and how our program could help you in your career growth.

From the Associate Director

  Kilichan GurleyikAssociate Director, Educational Programs

It gives me great pleasure to share with you that Department of Bioengineering at University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering, in conjunction with CMI, is offering Masters and Certificate programs in Medical Product Engineering and Innovation. At Pitt, we have a strong tradition of providing practical approaches to learning, and the educational programs offered by CMI in collaboration with Department of Bioengineering is no exception.

OUR BEGINNINGS      During 2011-2012 academic year, CMI’s educational programs started with just one course (Medical Product Ideation) and 11 students. Medical Product Ideation course became the cornerstone of the core educational programs. CMI added a second course (Medical Product Development) in the same academic year. I joined the CMI as the education director during 2012-2013 academic year, and added two additional hands-on courses (Clinical Bioengineering & Medical Product Prototyping) to our educational offerings. By 2013-2014 academic year, as word of mouth grew and students came rolling in, our educational programs have steadily grown to include a graduate certificate program in Medical Product Innovation (C-MPI) and a master of science in bioengineering degree program in Medical Product Engineering (MS-MPE). Today, our educational programs serve students from undergraduate seniors in Bioengineering to graduate students & post doctorates in Schools of Engineering, Business, Law and Medicine.

OUR PHILOSOPHY      We have designed these programs to provide a foundation in the theory coupled with practical training specific to medical products. Coursework centers around didactic and hands-on learning, and applied learning in the skills lab. Professional-level project experiences in all of our core courses prepare students for careers in the medical product industry. Electives allow students to seek out additional coursework most relevant to their interests, and the internship/co-op practicum for Masters students provides an opportunity to apply these skills in a real-world setting. Classes are scheduled primarily in evenings to accommodate working students and can be taken part-time to provide flexibility for busy working professionals.

Our strong educational partner, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), which is the largest medical center in the region, provides unlimited opportunities for our students to solve a broad spectrum of significant unmet clinical needs in healthcare.

At Pitt, we also have a deep commitment to celebrating a diversity of backgrounds, experience and ideas.  In keeping with this mission, we encourage domestic and international students from a wide variety of disciplines to apply.  We provide all students with individualized academic advising and support throughout the program.

We value the model of lifelong learning, and so, we also have numerous optional extracurricular activities arranged for our program students in order to give them a well-rounded education and strong preparation for their transition from the classroom to the office. Each semester, as some of our program students graduate and successfully move onto the next phase of their lives, we continue to improve our educational programs and grow organically with a strategic plan in key areas and key industrial partnerships with Pittsburgh’s innovation Ecosystem. It is wonderful to be surrounded by a medical product innovation community that is as passionate about our educational mission as we are, providing tremendous support to continued development & implementation of our educational offerings.

YOUR SUCCESS IS OUR SUCCESS    We are fully committed to working with each of our students to develop an individual training experience that allows them to attain their personal career objectives – essentially, we measure the success of our educational programs by our students’ success.

Our dedicated faculty and staff are always ready to work beside you. We also have an advisory team to help each of our program students reach their full potential. If your ambition is a career in medical product industry, I know your training at CMI will allow you to succeed in this endeavor. (See our Alumni page. These alumni are now working in a diverse range of careers including medical device and biotechnology companies, and medicine.)

Please consider this exciting opportunity for yourself and share it with your colleagues or other professionals who may be interested in enhancing their skills for a career focused in the medical device and technology field.

(Applications accepted on a rolling basis. Students are strongly encouraged to apply by January for Fall admission in order to be considered for tuition scholarships, if available.)
